Open Streets Minneapolis 2011

For four hours today one of the busiest thoroughfares in my neighborhood, Lyndale Avenue South between 22nd to 42nd streets, was closed to automobile traffic but open to pedestrians and bicyclists. As I wandered and photographed–surrounded by others exploring the avenue–I felt part of something bigger than myself. With the cars gone, people seemed engaged and happy. (Usually a bike ride along Lyndale leaves me fearing for my life as I dodge speeding cars and impatient, inattentive drivers.) But today everyone was relaxed and smiling; people stopped to socialize, gathered to listen to strolling musicians and even picnicked in the grassy boulevard. The Gorilla Yogis held a huge public yoga class at one of the busiest intersections in the city, Lake and Lyndale, while Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak cycled past. There were couples walking dogs, parents biking with children, kids on skateboards and bicycle taxi rides. The event seemed to inspire pride in the city and among neighborhood residents. I’m already looking forward to Open Streets 2012.
