This week’s post is a bit less about photography and more about a collection of pretty things I like. Over the years I’ve collected beautiful jewelry from some truly talented Minneapolis-based artists. The problem, if I can call it that, was that I was running out of storage space. While wandering around my favorite furniture showroom a month or so ago, I came across the perfect solution: the “Minus+ Hanger” from Danish Teak Classics. It’s a 23-inch long piece of powder-coated steel, bent into a pleasing shape and perfect for hanging pretty little things, like jewelry.
Note: If you love vintage furniture and modern design, visit the Danish Teak Classics showroom in the Northrup King Building in the northeast Minneapolis arts district. Steve and Phoebe at DTC regularly go to Denmark to track down high-quality furniture finds, which they ship back to Minnesota, restore and resell.
What I love about the “Minus+ Hanger” is that now the jewelry I regularly wear can be displayed above my dresser–a mini gallery installation of sorts–instead of hidden away in little drawers. The jewelry from most of the artists whose work is pictured below is available at the Walker Art Center shop. The pieces in sterling silver with lab-grown gemstones come from Karin Jacobson’s playful, bold collections. She also designed the lotus-shape necklace and some of the rings pictured on the ceramic dish. It was at Karin’s studio where I met Yen-Ying Chee, who made the lovely clear quartz crystal necklace and earrings, and Tia Keobounpheng, who made the organic-shaped wooden earrings and necklace. Other pieces pictured include circular enamel earrings from Iowa artist Tina Rice; gold earrings and necklace from Minneapolis artist Stacey Johnson; and a silver crochet-knot necklace from New York artist Magally Lopez.

[...] Yen is a jewelry designer, and Kar-Keat is an architect; they’re a wonderful couple and two of the nicest people you can know. I first met them a few years ago when they were selling Yen’s jewelry at a local artist jewelry mart at the Walker Art Center, and I’ve been a fan of her work every since. (See Yen’s beautiful jewelry at Yen Chee Design or in one of my previous blog posts.) [...]
